Small steps — unsubscribe, unsubscribe, unsubscribe. | by Steffen Wendt | Medium

A long, long time ago you visited this interesting website, read an article about something (you cant remember) and became fascinating with it.
Of course, you signed up for the newsletter and joyfully received one mail after another. No harm done here ! After a while, repeating this process hundreds of times, you end with an overwhelming feeling of information overload.
That is when we all initiate code RL “read later”, pushing the content somewhere else and watching it pile up. It´s like a marathon race — only you will never be able to catch up or finishing the race.

I have done this for wayyy to long now.

These attention grabbers fills up your inbox daily and activates a annoying red notification demanding your attention (i.e Panic mode aka READ ME, READ ME, READ ME).
It becomes a daily ritual receiving checking the email inbox, receiving the same newsletters over and over, and even, deleting it the moment they arrive.
I do this daily to WSJ marked updates, American Express newsletters, Sweet deals from (insert random company here) and so on. Adding those seconds up during 10 years and my guess is that I have lost several minutes of my life doing so. Life not-well spend.

DELETING NEWSLETTERS DAILY IS A HABIT.
I have done this unconsciously for a while. Way too long to admit it. I enjoy the feeling of “being updated” and receiving emails from companies and websites that I like.
The thing is: Not all of them adds value to my life.
It actually takes away VALUABLE time from my life and on top of that it also demands my attention daily — just for the fear of missing out on something important.

Its not quite spam or junk mail — but it is damn close !

ACTION PLAN — Spend 10 mins today on your emails and see how many newsletters you can unsubscribe from. (remember you can always re-subscribe if you regret it).

TOOLS: Unroll.me (For everyone ouside of the EU) or manually unsubscribing within the emails/newsletters.

CUT TO THE BONE !

  • If you see an email from a company/newsletter/person/etc that you have not read entirely the last 7 days = UNSUBSCRIBE.
  • If you have a habit of instantly deleting the email once it lands into your inbox = UNSUBSCRIBE.
  • If you think you MIGHT read it later = UNSUBSCRIBE.
  • If you enjoy receiving an email from a newsletter/company/person and you genuinely reads it/get inspired from it/grow from it = KEEP IT FOR A MONTH and REVALUATE AGAIN.
  • Multiple sources are a no-go. (for example several news source emails)
  • Zero your inbox and archive your emails. Start from a fresh and be very selective about what kind of newsletter/info you receive in the future.

Only subscribe to things that truly makes you happy and adds value to your life. It is ok to receive weekly newsletters of kittens or stories about travelling. The point is to narrow it down to your absolute essential and to receive e-mails that adds value. It can be spiritual value, knowledge, happiness or something else. Don´t limit yourself to others beliefs. This is about having the control and choosing the rate of information that you receive daily.

To DYI (DECLARING YOUR INDEPENDENCE) is to honor your own time and recognise how valuable it is. YOU should always be in control and have the power to do so. Remove the noise from your inbox and take the first step towards DYI (DECLARING YOUR INDEPENDENCE).

Let me know how it goes ! How many newsletters and “newsletter pollution” did you unsubscribe from today ? Be supers strict !
I want to hear YOUR absolute, bone cutting, must have, hyper inspirational, “can´t live without” top 3 newsletters that you are subscribing to.

Good luck !
